GREENWOOD GARDEN HOME

SEATTLE HOMES — RESIDENTIAL DESIGN — GREEN BUILDING

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON

This new custom home, tucked into a narrow lot in the Greenwood neighborhood of Seattle, is completely connected to its landscape.

The pavilion scheme—a glass box of sorts—holds a skylit entry, kitchen, dining area, and living space that connect to the front, side, and backyard gardens with a variety of thoughtfully placed openings.

Large windows beautifully trimmed in Douglas fir extend to the floor bringing focus to the side yard’s bioretention garden for the homeowners to enjoy. A dry garden at the street and raised beds for veggies and herbs can be accessed by the kitchen door as well as the front entrance. High clerestory windows, placed for privacy bring in loads of light and create a gallery space for the couple’s art. A northwest garden with native perennials fills the backyard.

The kitchen shines with custom-designed cabinets and Dekton countertops. Masonry extends the connection to the exterior in both the kitchen and the living room hearth. The polished concrete floors marry the spaces. A plaster art wall at the entry creates yet another indoor/outdoor follow-through, made more intimate and functional by a storage bench that graces the front door. Ten skylights along the axis of the great room bring in tons of natural light even on the grayest of Pacific Northwest days.

The large window, with obscure glazing for privacy, brings diffused light to both levels. Upstairs hosts the primary ensuite at one end, a home office at the other, with a library bringing the private spaces together.
