middle housing—URBAN INFILL backyard cottages—ADU + DADU—POLICY CHANGE

As one of the region's leading voices for abundant and affordable housing choices, CAST has been advocating for middle housing, backyard cottages, and small multi-family homes for two decades. More efficient land use is critical to address our housing crisis, climate change, and persistent inequities in access to housing opportunities. We want as many people as possible to benefit from a mix of housing options.

CAST’s Matt Hutchins presents on a wide array of topics, from thoughtful design of middle housing to effective planning to high-performance building and green design.

As one of the founders of CAST architecture, Matt Hutchins has spent more than 25 years working to increase the vitality of our cities and the environment.

Matt is Co-Chair of the Seattle Planning Commission and the past Strategic Councilor for AIA Washington. He has served as AIA Seattle President (2024-25) and as Board President of the Seattle Design Festival (2024-25). As a volunteer for AIA Seattle, he has served on the Board of Directors since 2021, led the Public Policy Board, co-chaired the Housing Task Force, and organized many programs on urban design, housing, and accessory dwelling units.
