BACKYARD COTTAGES — RESIDENTIAL DESIGN — SMARTH GROWTH

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON

This 800 square foot two-story backyard cottage was designed for a retiring couple looking to downsize and rent out their main house, without leaving their beloved neighborhood. Two bedrooms, one and a half baths, and an open great room create a comfortable home filled with daylight and rich details.

The tansu-style staircase doubles as a bookshelf, media center and mechanical room along with a living space that extends into the garden makes the small house feel spacious and encourages outdoor living. The kitchen, with plenty of counter space, but not much floor space, allows guests to interact from the dining side of the peninsula. Locating storage, stairs, and the radiant-floor boiler closet on the west wall allows great light on the east and south overlooking the garden. Every room on the second floor, including the walk-in closet, is filled with natural light from skylights.

Square feet: 800
